Memorial Day Poem

The Private’s Wife

When sleep came at last
your form rested beside me
but when I dared
to reach out to touch you
an unoccupied pillow
met my hand

huddled under covers
I opened my eyes to a silent room
while there you sleep
across the sea
beneath a field
of red poppies

  1. Simply beautiful, Lori. You sculpt away until the words that remain are lovely in form and effective in causing hearts to resonate with them.

  2. Particularly beautiful and poignant.

  3. Trying to catch my breath, not bothering to try and catch the tears.

Thanks for stopping by the Barn Door! We'd love to hear from you!
