Valentine's Day Midwest Meandering by TG Miller

I found these cherries the last time I bought them to eat. Perfect for Valentine's Day.

I know it's Valentine's Day, but I love the movie, Groundhog Day and the Groundhog Day celebration, but my day to post isn't February 2nd. This year The Groundhog didn't see his shadow, which means according the experts that spring is sooner rather than later. I hope so! I could use a little spring, how 'bout you??

I saw a fat squirrel sitting on a branch outside my porch window eating a nut. I figure maybe soon isn't that far-fetched, and today, while chilly and cloudy, it isn't that cold (or not cold enough for my long underwear.) It's been colder, but like we always say, "Wait a few minutes and it'll change." Yes, we've run the heat and AC in one day. Ok, back to Groundhog Day and I'm ignoring Valentine's Day for the moment.

In my dad's family nicknaming people is rampant. My dad's nickname was "Groundhog." (Dad died in 1999.) Maybe that's why when I see a groundhog I think of him and all the family fun and tomfoolery that happens when there is laughter, a bit of teasing and good times. I remember my dad's family being warm and welcoming, loving you for who you were. It didn't stay that way, but back when it was, it was heavenly.
My dad, whom everyone in his extended family called "Groundhog."
I didn't get a nickname from my extended family. I'm not sure why. Well, they did shorten my name because they didn't really care for my real name. I wasn't called Crystal, my given name, until I married Chris. Until then, everyone called me Cris or Crissy. My extended family and some childhood friends still call me this. I've been married for nearly 32 years, so even though it sounds strange now to hear, "Cris" referring to me, it can take me back in a New York minute. Do you have a nickname? Does it bring up good memories?

Names and nicknames are intriguing to me. Some of my girlfriends in high school gave each other nicknames. Mine was "Beanpole" and "Crissy Woman" and I'm still not sure how that happened. When I see those girls, I still get called by my nicknames and I can't help but call them by theirs.

And when I was doing competition trapshooting around the country, my husband's extended family who also did trapshooting gave me a nickname--"TG"--which they said stood for "The Trapshooting Goddess." (Not many women did trapshooting with them back then.) So, for some of them, I'm still "TG." It brings back great memories.

I've got a lot on my mind, so forgive this Valentine's Day Midwest Meandering. Between my computer crash and total swiping of my computer's stuff, and other issues, I almost didn't make it on today's post. But I  did want to check in and let you know I'm thinking about all of you.  Hope it's an early spring--both figuratively and for reals!

Love, Peace and Bobby Sherman (as my high school friends and I used to say,)

(Or just call me "TG." LOL.)

  1. Happy Valentine's day and Groundhog Day, too Crystal aka TG, et al. Nice shot of your dad.

Even though it's been in the 30's the air has a spring feel to it - no bite. I heard a cardinal sing. Potato Creek State Park announced the first sandhill cranes have arrived. Yup. Spring's coming.

  2. I too, love the movie Groundhog Day! Don't exactly know why, but I do. And my mother's side of the family all give people nicknames. In fact, my grandpa & uncle NEVER called me by my given name. I was always called...Pete. I have NO idea why! But, Pete it is. And my dad still calls me that. I have cousins I've never met & to this day I still only know them by nicknames!

    Robby,
    Bobby,
    Bird,
    Knobby-Knees Nelson (not my favorite),
and a pediatrist I saw only once called me Robinski. I informed him of my real name. :)

  4. Pete! I love it! And Knobby-Knees! LOL, Bird! Ok, you all are making me laugh.

Mary, love hearing about your neck of the woods--you're a girl after my own heart, Red. (Did anyone ever call you Red? LOL.)

My husband is great for giving out nicknames --one feller we know he calls Double A-Ron (his name is Aaron...)And my neighbor who was my best friend's dad always gave everyone a nickname, I just remembered--he called me "Cisco."

I'm still laughing about Knobby-Knees and Pete!

  5. Thanks, TG! I think your post was perfect for Valentine's Day. Generally, we give nicknames for people we love. :-)
It's fun to see that Shelley is sometimes called Pete. My mom was Pete, too! She and her sister were Pete and Sam and I think I was 12 before I realized that her name was really Daphne. No one ever called her that except for telemarketers. So my kids had 'Grandma Pete'! Thanks for those wonderful memories.

  6. Okay, dare I admit I've never seen Groundhog Day? I know, I know. I'm probably the only person in the US who hasn't.
Nicknames can be great, and they can be hurtful. My dad always called me DeeDee. Doesn't sound much like Stacy but whatever. In junior high we picked Disney nicknames and they decided I'd be Dumbo because my ears stuck out. No surprise that I'm still self-conscious about my ears!

Peace, love and Bobby Sherman to you, TG!

  8. Holly, I have never heard anyone nicknamed "Pete" (well, women, I mean) and here there are two of you who have Pete nicknames.

And Stacy, you are so right. Some nicknames can be cruel and heartless--I had a couple nicknames like that which I choose to forget, however, it made me highly sensitive to cruelty to others. I'm glad you brought that up.

Lisa, I think I'm confused...LOL. My DH says that every day is Christmas, but I think everyday is Groundhog Day! :D

One more comment for Stacy--just ask me and I'll quote Groundhog Day all day long. LOL! It's an interesting premise. What would you do if you woke up to the same day in the same town every day--what would you do with a lifetime of the same day over and over? Wow.
