Now that we are officially past Thanksgiving, I can play Christmas carols guilt-free. Yes, I did listen to my Christmas playlist in July this year. It was hot. I was trying to cool off.
Anyway, I have a few favorites. Love Carol of the Bells and there are so many renditions out there, you can listen to it forever. O Holy Night and What Child Is This are right up there too.
When I was little, I remember my mom working in the kitchen, probably baking cookies or Christmas Eve dinner, and she would have this one album on the stereo. Remember those things? Ours was a large console cabinet. You had to lift the lid to get to the record player. I thought it was cool because you could put multiple records on there and when one finished, another would drop down.
Anyway, the album I remember most was by the Harry Simeone Chorale. It had Little Drummer Boy on it and several different carols that are hard to find, like Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella. This year, after years of searching, I found the album on iTunes. I bought it. The entire thing. It brings such a rush of memories, all good ones. I can hear it playing, see the tree in the corner, smell bread and cookies baking, remember the safe, happy, cared-for feeling. (If you notice at the bottom of the screen, there is a next button. It will take you to hear other Harry Simeone songs.)
What are some of your favorite Christmas carols? Which ones bring back the best memories?
