I've Become a (Midwest) Soccer Mom

(well, sort of - you'll see below)

It felt like fall (finally!) this past Saturday here in West Michigan: just in time for my 11-year-old son's noon AYSO  soccer game.
We're in the neon shirts. Team name is the Hawks.
Though he's been playing at recess for several years, this is only his first year playing AYSO (he played last spring, and this is his first fall season). He seems to enjoy it, and we enjoy watching his games (despite the fact I barely know the rules).

But Saturday, it was cold. Rain off and on. Wind. Air temperatures in the 40's (lower, mostly). And I was born in Southern California. I have THIN BLOOD, people!
My boy - #35. Must have inherited my thin blood
The kids, it seemed, had little trouble keeping warm (most of them, anyway). All the action out on the field kept their blood pumping. It's something to see 10- and11-year-olds hustle like that. And most of them were IN SHORTS. Guess exerting yourself does that to ya.
See all the umbrellas, coats, etc?
The spectators, however, were a bit less energetic - and unafraid to bundle up. Coats, blankets, umbrellas, and more were all over the sidelines. There were even a few folks who took off early.

But the Shers? Once we found our spot, we stuck with it. No matter the wind, rain, or temperatures, we stayed put...inside my car along the edge of the soccer field.
Go ahead - call me a wimp. I likely won't argue.
I DID tell you I had Southern California blood, didn't I? And I WATCHED THE WHOLE GAME. (We ended in a tie: 2-2)

Here's hoping for a BIT warmer weather for the next few games, eh?

So, how much of a wimp am I? ;)

  1. awww honey - you gotta toughen up! This is Michigan. I've sat through football games in torrential rains and snow storms. Just keep repeating: hot chocolate, hot bathtub full of bubbles, warm cuddly blankie, mom of the year award. :)

  2. Hehe - working on it, Diane :) Part of it was because I wasn't dressed for it :)

  3. I have this great full-length denim duster that worked miracles when I stood on golf courses during those cross country meets, and sat in the bleachers for track meets and watched tennis meets. Fond memories. Keep a blanket in the car...

  4. Stick with it. If he keeps enjoying soccer you will have many more years of this, and then all of a sudden it will be over.
That's when you'll realize every minute was worth it, and somehow your blood thickened in the process.

  5. Definitely sticking with it - and I need to pick up something NICE and warm for me.

    Thanks, ladies!

  6. I remember when my son ran cross country. The weather always seemed rotten. I'd stand for the start of the race, get in the car when the runners disappeared over the hill, get out and yell as they passed by again, back in the car, and then out for the finish. At least you get to see him the whole time. But then--I got to get in a warm car :-)

  7. Honey, you know the saying:
    You know you're from Michigan
    if you've gone trick-
    or-treating in a blizzard
    (done that).

    I still laugh remembering
when I met you in Los
    Angeles:you picked up my
    ice scraper in my car,
    having NO idea what it
    was, and after telling
    you, you didn't believe
    me. hehe

  8. What a good mom. You stayed for the whole game. Sitting in the car isn't wimpy...sounds like a smart move to me!
